Mayor Muriel Bowser Proclaims Washington, DC – The ‘District of Pride!’ Historic City Hall Hoists LGBT Pride Flag for the First Time

In a bold move, Mayor Muriel Bowser designates Washington, DC as the “District of Pride,” reaffirming her commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community. For the first time, the Pride flag was raised at the historic John A. Wilson Building, emphasizing the city’s inclusive values.

Mayor Muriel Bowser has taken a strong stand in support of the LGBTQIA+ community, recently proclaiming Washington, DC as the “District of Pride.” Marking the beginning of Pride Month, Bowser made history by raising the LGBTQIA+ pride flag at the John A. Wilson Building, an unprecedented move reiterating the nation’s capital’s dedication to inclusivity.

Home to the Executive Office of the Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia, the John A. Wilson Building was a fitting location for the historic flag raising. In her statement, Mayor Bowser emphasized that while Pride Month is in June, Washington, DC celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community all year round.

Adding to this symbolic gesture, the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge was illuminated in Pride colors for everyone to witness. Additionally, the people of DC can ride Pride-themed transportation options throughout the month, further embracing and promoting an inclusive environment.

Taking things one step further, the city has also been chosen to host World Pride 2025, a prestigious global event that draws attention to LGBTQIA+ issues. The two-week event, taking place from May 23 to June 8, 2025, sends a powerful message that Washington, DC is not only LGBTQIA+-friendly but also a leader in providing support and resources for the community.

Mayor Bowser’s leadership demonstrates a clear commitment to investing in the LGBTQ+ community. In Fiscal Year 2024, the city allocated nearly $1,000,000 towards community development and cultural competency LGBTQIA+ training grant funds. The money is intended for various purposes, such as establishing an LGBTQIA+ community center, funding counseling services for LGBTQ residents affected by intimate partner violence, and setting aside housing vouchers for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

In conclusion, Mayor Muriel Bowser has indelibly marked Washington, DC as the “District of Pride,” stepping up to support and embrace the LGBTQIA+ community. With the historic raising of the Pride flag at City Hall and the city hosting World Pride 2025, the nation’s capital proves it is advocating for the values of inclusivity and diversity.
