Authorities arrested 42-year-old Cunningham in January of 2022, who had been captured on security camera footage behaving suspiciously around Melia the day before her murder. During the investigation, damning evidence linking Cunningham to Melia’s death was uncovered, including his fingerprints and her blood on his footwear. While he initially claimed he’d only had consensual sexual contact with Melia, later examinations revealed his DNA under her fingernails, proving otherwise.

Despite the unwavering evidence against him, Cunningham never confessed to the crime, nor did he offer any apology throughout the trial. After being convicted of aggravated murder and two counts of object sexual penetration, prosecutors sought the stiffest possible sentencing for Cunningham.
