The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has labeled Moms for Liberty an “anti-government extremist group,” despite the organization stating that its mission is to fight for the nation’s survival by helping parents protect their rights in their children’s public school education. The SPLC claims the group fuels right-wing hysteria, creating an unsafe environment for certain students, particularly Black and LGBTQ individuals. However, Moms for Liberty co-founders Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich argue that their organization empowers parents to be involved in their children’s education and that labeling the group as “bigoted” highlights the conflict between parents and government employees over deciding what is taught in schools.

Moms for Liberty began only two years ago in response to teacher’s unions’ decisions during the pandemic. Since then, the organization has rapidly expanded to 45 states, demonstrating the widespread desire of parents to have a say in their children’s education. Justice and Descovich note that their fundamental goal remains the empowerment of parents, emphasizing that parental rights should extend into the classroom.

The allegations from the SPLC against Moms for Liberty are indicative of a broader trend of labeling concerned parents as extremists. For example, the group has been accused of promoting conspiracy theories and harmful ideologies. However, the co-founders assert that their goal is to ensure that parents have a voice in determining what their children learn in the classroom as they believe parents should play an active role in their child’s education.
