**Bold Michigan Boy, 10, Steals SUV for Joyride, Outsmarted by Police and OnStar**
A 10-year-old boy in Michigan was at the center of a dangerous chase when he allegedly stole a Buick Encore SUV and was subsequently apprehended by police, thanks in part to the vehicle’s OnStar technology.
The child had been staying with relatives but wanted to visit his mother over Memorial Day weekend and decided to steal the vehicle to get there. The SUV’s route quickly caught the attention of police after the vehicle’s OnStar service, which allows remote access and control, notified law enforcement of its theft.
As the young driver led police on a chase down Interstate 75, the car can be seen on Michigan State Police’s Third District dashcam footage swerving from one lane to another with hazard lights flashing. The authorities unsuccessfully tried to bring the boy to a stop but ultimately relied on the OnStar system to remotely disable the car. The SUV came grazing to a halt along a guardrail.
However, the young driver was not yet ready to give up. He attempted to escape on foot by jumping from the passenger side of the car and making a run for nearby woods. His getaway was short-lived, as officers quickly closed the gap and captured him, thankfully with no injuries reported.
The boy’s adventure took a serious turn, as he now faces multiple charges, including unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police, and assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police.
