The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) conducted a survey of over 6,000 citizens across 11 European Union member countries to gauge their support in the event of a U.S.-China conflict. Results revealed that only a quarter would want their country or Europe to back America, with 62% choosing to remain neutral despite Chinese infiltration, subversion, and economic coercion. The respondents’ views on China ranged from necessary partnerships to rivals and adversaries. European leaders, such as European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, exemplify the two primary ideologies in play: de-risking and deference. Both these approaches seem to prioritize continued relations and appeasement of Beijing, even if it chooses to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or fails to stick to democratic principles and human rights practices.
