Fireworks Fiasco: July 4th Festivities Under Attack By Climate Nazis

The L.A. Regional Water Quality Control Board’s decision to enforce a firework permit rule has sparked outrage among residents and fireworks enthusiasts. The regulation aims to address the adverse effects of fireworks on nearby water sources, which have long been a concern for environmental activists.

The Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation (CERF), a prominent advocate for coastal preservation, spearheaded a lawsuit against the Big Bang on the Bay fireworks show held in Long Beach in 2022. Although the judge ruled against CERF’s interpretation of the Clean Water Act, evidence presented during the trial revealed the discharge of “fireworks-related pollutants” into Alamitos Bay, thereby highlighting the potential environmental impact caused by pyrotechnic displays.

Livia Borak Beaudin, one of the lead attorneys representing CERF, emphasized the need for regulating firework shows to minimize environmental damage. While acknowledging the disappointment felt by those whose fireworks displays have been canceled, Beaudin asserted that the shows could proceed if they met the new regulations. However, the majority of fireworks producers have failed to comply with the stringent requirements, leaving the anticipated displays in jeopardy.

Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, renowned for its awe-inspiring fireworks spectacles, confirmed its decision not to pursue the necessary permit. Jim Souza, CEO of the company, cited concerns for the safety of their staff and the public as the primary reason behind their non-compliance. Souza further criticized the water board’s swift implementation of the new regulations, highlighting the lack of consultation with experienced industry experts.

Contrary to Pyro Spectaculars’ stance, other fireworks vendors have managed to meet the new permit requirements, assuring their participation in the Fourth of July celebrations. However, the setback caused by the overall industry’s lack of compliance raises questions about the future of firework displays and the broader implications for patriotic traditions across the nation.

As the echoes of fireworks fade along California’s coastline this Independence Day, a poignant message reverberates. The cancellation of beloved shows due to environmental concerns not only dampens patriotic spirits but will not hold true patriots from celebrating their freedom regardless who tells them not to. We sure hope to hear Americans push back on these environmental clowns.
