The WNBA and its players have been stirring up controversy recently, but not for their basketball skills. Brittney Griner, a WNBA player, was detained in Russia for drug charges, drawing attention to the league’s lackluster performance. Meanwhile, players like Natasha Cloud of the Washington Mystics have taken to social media to spout off leftist talking points, bashing America and promoting divisive policies like affirmative action.
Cloud’s recent comments on Twitter and Instagram have drawn ire from those who value American ideals and reject identity politics. She called America “trash” and accused the country of oppressing marginalized groups, ignoring the fact that America is one of the most tolerant and diverse nations on earth. Her implication that minorities and LGBTQ+ individuals are still being “attacked” flies in the face of reality, as these groups enjoy unprecedented freedom and rights in America.
Indeed, the Supreme Court’s recent ruling striking down affirmative action policies for college admissions represents a victory for equal treatment under the law. Affirmative action has a shameful history of discrimination against whites and Asians, and many argue that it perpetuates the very divides it seeks to address. It’s no wonder that the majority of Americans oppose affirmative action, and that even some prominent people of color have spoken out against it.
But instead of recognizing the facts and encouraging unity, Cloud and other WNBA players seem bent on fomenting division and resentment. They push divisive policies and cast America as a villain, despite the many blessings and opportunities it affords them. It’s a shame that these athletes can’t stick to basketball and leave their politics at the door.
The NBA is no better, with “social justice warriors” like LeBron James and Steph Curry using their platforms to promote leftist causes like gun control and “racial justice.” But true fans of the game know that politics has no place on the court. As Michael Jordan famously said, “Republicans buy sneakers, too.” The NBA needs to get back to focusing on the game and entertaining fans, rather than pandering to the latest leftist fads.
In conclusion, the WNBA and NBA would do well to remember that sports should be a unifying force, not a divisive one. America is the land of opportunity, and players in these leagues should be grateful for the freedoms and rights they enjoy, rather than bashing the country and pushing harmful policies. Let’s hope that these athletes can focus on the game and bring fans together, rather than drive them apart with their political posturing.
