Former President Donald Trump is once again making headlines as he contemplates his attendance at the first Republican presidential primary debate on August 23. However, the one thing that Trump has made clear is that he will not abide by the GOP’s requirement that candidates sign a loyalty pledge. His reasoning stems from his belief that there are individuals on the candidate list, whom he would not endorse nor support for president of the United States.

In a recent interview with Newsmax host Eric Bolling, Trump shared his views on the matter, stating that “I wouldn’t sign the pledge. Why would I sign a pledge if there are people on there that I wouldn’t have? I wouldn’t have certain people as you know, somebody that I would endorse. I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president, so right there, there’s a problem.” Trump refuses to stoop to the level of signing a pledge that is filled with dishonesty, corruption, and deceit.
Bolling attempted to get Trump to disclose who these candidates are, but the former president refused to do so, explaining that there was no reason to insult them. Trump has made it clear that his decision to attend the debate has nothing to do with being afraid to confront opposition. He insists that he is perfectly capable of facing his opponents head-on and winning the debate without having to sign any loyalty pledge.
Trump’s popularity amongst American citizens is undeniably high, with the latest polls showing his support level at 75, 78, and 80 percent, while other candidates remain at 0, 1, 2, or 3 percent. Trump is, therefore, left to ponder the question of whether or not there is an “upside” as to why he should attend the debate. He believes that the other candidates are intelligent individuals, including senators and governors, and that they too have the potential to increase their standings. Still, he maintains that he is comfortable with his current position in the polls.
