The Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC was the target of vandalism on Wednesday morning, with red paint and “Free Gaza” graffiti spread across its steps and surrounding plaza. Fox 5 reports that the United States Park Police discovered the damage, which is situated between the Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial Circle.

National Park Service conservators have started the cleaning process, but officials warn that it could take several days and multiple treatments to fully restore the site. As a result, the steps of the memorial are temporarily closed to visitors.

This incident comes amidst a series of vandalisms targeting historic monuments in Washington, D.C., coinciding with the “National March for Palestine.” Notably, the Lafayette monument near the White House was also defaced, with a Palestinian flag placed in the hands of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, and other statues including those of Benjamin Franklin and Andrew Jackson were similarly vandalized with Palestinian flags, keffiyeh scarves, and anti-American and anti-Israel slogans. The public is urged to come forward with any information regarding these acts of vandalism.
