Remember a short while back when the liberal press raised the alarm bells about our democracy’s purported demise? Anybody with a clear memory and a dose of truth can recall how publications like the New York Times and the Washington Post, along with TV networks like PBS and CNN, came out swingin’, heckling and hollering. These institutions stuck their fingers in the direction of former President Donald Trump and his supporters, their usual suspects, as the sources of this imminent catastrophe threatening our democratic norms.
Less than a year ago, the New York Times and the Washington Post were all over the map with their stern warnings about democracy under threat. Phrases such as ‘A Crisis Coming’, ‘Democracy Is Backsliding’, and ‘Yes, Democracy Really Is in Danger’ grabbed headlines and dominated news cycles. Their fears seemed hyperfocused on Trump and his supporters as the driving force behind the so-called impending democratic decay.
In stark contrast, the liberal media’s headlines changed the tune quickly following Trump’s conviction. Their recent news pieces carry loud proclaimations like ‘Biden Declares Trump Verdict a Victory for the Rule of Law’ and ‘Donald Trump, Felon: The former president’s conviction a reminder of why he is unfit for office.’ Don’t you find that something is missing here? Isn’t it strange that the urgent worry about democracy that was so prevalent in countless earlier headlines had simply vanished following Trump’s conviction?
The crystal clear takeaway from these discrepancies is that the liberal media’s panic over the alleged erosion of democracy was not so much about democracy itself, but rather another opportunity for them to make a move on their political chessboard. The supposed imminent democratic catastrophe was essentially a smoke screen, behind which the actual agenda was to score a point against their conservative adversaries.
When millions of Americans are alarmed over a president being convicted just because of his political orientation, the left-leaning mainstream media seems oblivious, uninterested. Their selective response echoes these words by Ronald Reagan, whom his staff fondly called ‘The O&W’ (‘The Oldest and Wisest’), “But freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it and then hand it to them with the well-thought lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same.”
As a closing note, it is crucial to understand that these twisted media narratives can spin a web around democracy, repurposing it for political gains. The liberal media’s alarmist headlines served as a cover for scoring political points, brushing aside real concerns held by millions of Americans. It’s a stark reminder that our democracy is not a tool to be weilded by those with a louder microphone.
