What’s the real story on the recent surge at the border? Without any sugarcoating, but just plain facts, Joe Biden took a significant, albeit late, step in border control. This week, he declared an executive order aimed at restricting the number of migrants seeking asylum at the southern border. With only a few months until the next election, the move has raised eyebrows, fueling speculations that the decision is purely political and far from Biden’s pro-immigrant stand.
The sudden policy shift has the mainstream media dancing to Biden’s tune. Among the media giants, PBS NewsHour stands out, providing Biden a whopping 13-minute window to explain himself while giving only 17 seconds to Republicans to voice their side. The imbalance is blatant, painting a clear picture of the impoverished state of impartial reporting these days.
Biden’s statements about never demonizing immigrants and vowing not to repeat past Republican administration’s actions haven’t lifted the cloud of doubt. Many question his motives for enforcing one of his most stringent policies yet on the U.S.-Mexico border. The timing simply doesn’t add up.
Laura Barrón-López, a White House reporter, eloquently discussed Biden’s use of “212(f) authority” to shut down asylum requests only when daily averages hit about 2,500. Even so, she openly addressed the wide exceptions to the rule: unaccompanied children and victims of human trafficking. Yet, just like Biden, the questions on why the President waited so long to tap his authority remained unanswered.
PBS also spotlighted Senators Nanette Diaz Barragan and John Cornyn. Diaz Barragan, a seasoned Democrat, expressed disappointment in Biden for using Trump-like measures. As she rightfully pointed out, what failed before won’t work now. Not to be outdone, Senator Cornyn slammed Biden’s order as a mere political move.
From a conservative’s perspective, it’s frustrating to see PBS finally realize that Biden always had the authority to secure the borders. We had this information presented as early as February discussing the congressional border bill, which, unfortunately, flopped. It makes one wonder why Biden waited until now, five months before the election, to use his power to address and correct ongoing border concerns.
Senator Mark Kelly, another liberal portrayed as a moderate, claimed he backs Biden’s decision but then contradicted Biden’s past remarks. In a 2020 debate, Biden had slammed Trump for using the same authority to restrict asylum- a move he is now mirroring.
In the end, this liberal media coverage only weakens public trust and confidence in journalism. They twist their loyalty to their opinion instead of their responsibility to deliver the truth. It’s high time journalists remember the essence of their roles and return to unbiased reporting. The public deserves and expects an objective press to hold leaders accountable, regardless of political affiliation. Until then, we’ll continue to seek the truth amid the haze of news manipulation.
