The liberal hosts of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert, and The Daily Show, Jordan Klepper, recently tried to make a mountain out of a molehill. This nonsense follows secret recordings of Justice Samuel Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann. Colbert and Klepper inferred religious fanaticism, and even fascism, from these recordings, spinning an odd, unfounded narrative.
Colbert seized upon the recordings, suggesting they validate critics’ notions that Alito supports the January 6th insurrectionists because he’s flown flags outside his home. Trying to make a connection, Colbert said Alito’s remarks mirrored the flags’ symbolism.
The recording features Alito saying, “One side or the other, one side or the other is going to win. I don’t know. There can be a — a way of working, a way of living together peacefully, but it’s difficult, you know, because there are differences on fundamental things that really can’t be compromised.”
However, Colbert used this comment to paint Alito as biased, forgetting that it’s a statement of fact. Either Republicans or Democrats win the election; the plaintiff or the defendant wins the case. It’s not Alito’s job to soothe Colbert’s feelings by pretending there’s a political compromise in law. Martha-Ann’s reaction to the criticism she’s received was thrown under scrutiny as well, her heritage seeming to be the reason why Colbert hastily brandished the fascism card.
Klepper shared similar views, choosing to affirm that the secret recordings confirm critics’ theories about Alito, dubbing him a religious nut for overturning Roe v. Wade. He proceeded to delve into Martha-Ann’s apparent fascination with flags, using it as a basis to question her mentality and intention.
Martha-Ann’s desire to fly a Sacred Heart of Jesus flag was met with a mocking response from Klepper. He added, “So, Martha-Ann got so mad after seeing a Pride flag that she’s planning to put up a whole bunch of Jesus flags to combat it.”
The implication here was that both Colbert and Klepper are stretching the truth, skewing facts and misreading intentions in their indiscriminate zeal to discredit anyone even mildly conservative. The hosts failed to note that the recordings were obtained by a liberal activist in disguise, hinting at a clear bias in their narrative. Yet they overlooked the critical question of whether obtaining such recordings, especially under deceitful pretenses, is ethical.
Their misuse of media platforms to promote biased perceptions is a clear cause for concern. The truth is no one needs permission to fly flags they believe in, and having a difference in opinion doesn’t make one a fanatic. Freedom of speech is guaranteed under the Constitution; it’s high time we respected it.
