Mother-Daughter Duo Returns: ‘Freaky Friday’ Sequel Confirmed

In an exciting development for fans of family-friendly comedies, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have officially confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 2003 Disney film “Freaky Friday” is not only in the works but already in production. The news broke on Monday when Curtis, 65, shared a captivating image on her Instagram account, sending fans into a frenzy of anticipation.

The photo, originally posted by Disney Studios, showcases Curtis and Lohan, 37, seated side by side in front of a trailer, with their names emblazoned in stars behind them – a clever nod to their characters’ body-switching predicament in the original film. Curtis’s enthusiasm was palpable in her caption: “WE ARE FREAKING OUT because the Coleman’s are getting FREAKY AGAIN! @disney @disneystudios @lindsaylohan @nisha.ganatra.”

Lohan, equally excited about the project, followed up with a video post on her own Instagram, featuring the two actresses posing for pictures in front of the trailers. Her simple yet potent caption, “We’re Back,” served as a thrilling confirmation for fans who have long hoped for a continuation of the Coleman family’s story.

Disney Studios’ official announcement revealed that the sequel is slated for a theatrical release in 2025, promising the return of the beloved characters that captivated audiences over two decades ago. “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!” the studio declared, confirming that production is already underway.

The original “Freaky Friday,” released in 2003, was itself a reboot of the 1976 Disney film starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris. Based on Mary Rodgers’s 1972 novel, the story follows an overworked mother and her teenage daughter who don’t see eye to eye. When they mysteriously switch bodies, each is forced to adapt to the other’s life, leading to hilarious situations and heartwarming moments of understanding.

Curtis and Lohan’s version was a massive success, both critically and commercially. With a modest budget of $26 million, the film went on to gross $160 million worldwide, cementing its status as a modern classic in the Disney canon. The chemistry between Curtis and Lohan was widely praised, making them the perfect choice to reprise their roles in this long-awaited sequel.

While details about the plot remain under wraps, fans are eagerly speculating about how the story might evolve. Will the body-switching shenanigans continue, or will the Colemans face a new supernatural challenge? The involvement of director Nisha Ganatra, known for her work on “Late Night” and “The High Note,” suggests that the sequel may bring a fresh perspective to the franchise while maintaining the heart and humor that made the original so beloved.

This project marks a significant return to Disney for Lohan, who rose to fame with the studio’s films in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Her breakout role in the 1998 remake of “The Parent Trap” and subsequent appearances in “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” (2004) established her as a teen idol and showcased her versatility as an actress.

For Curtis, the “Freaky Friday” sequel adds another chapter to her illustrious career, which has spanned decades and genres. Her recent success with the “Halloween” franchise reboot demonstrates her enduring appeal and ability to revisit iconic roles with fresh energy and perspective.

As production moves forward, fans can expect more teasers and behind-the-scenes glimpses from both stars and the studio. The anticipation for this sequel is a testament to the enduring appeal of “Freaky Friday” and its themes of family, understanding, and self-discovery.

With its scheduled 2025 release, the “Freaky Friday” sequel is poised to introduce a new generation to the magic of body-switching comedy while offering a nostalgic treat for those who grew up with the original. As Curtis and Lohan step back into the shoes (and bodies) of Tess and Anna Coleman, audiences worldwide are eager to see what freaky adventures await the Coleman family in this highly anticipated follow-up.
