A former Twitter employee dropped some damning allegations about the company on capitol hill this week.
According to Trending Politics, During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, a Twitter whistleblower who was the company’s security chief before being fired testified.
According to a whistleblower complaint filed by Peiter Zatko, a former hacker-turned-security chief, his former company had failed to adhere to government security agreements.
An example of these include the persistent vulnerability of personal user data, which could be accessed by any “engineer”, and the repeated targeting and infiltration of foreign agents such as those from China, India and Russia.
In addition, under questioning from Congressman Josh Hawley, Zatko said that over 4,000 Twitter employees have access to geolocation data and IP addresses and could potentially use that to dox Twitter users.
Twitter responded to the whistleblower complaint by insisting that Zatko was fired “for poor performance and ineffective leadership.”
Meanwhile, on the same day Zatko testified in front of Congress, Twitter shareholders voted to approve Elon Musk’s $44 billion bid to take over the social media platform.
According to Elon Musk’s legal team, whistleblower claims are among the reasons for terminating the deal. The Senate hearings prompted a simple tweet from him on Tuesday.
