JD Vance and other Trump-backed candidates won their primaries this week in Ohio. It showed who is still in charge of the Republican primary.
Even Mitt Romney had to admit that.
The Utah Senator argues that if anti-Trump Republicans like himself think that the former President is losing influence, they are not understanding the reality of the situation.
“I don’t delude myself into thinking I have a big swath of the Republican Party,” Romney said in an interview with Politico. “It’s hard to imagine anything that would derail his support. So if he wants to become the nominee in ‘24, I think he’s very likely to achieve that.”
The admission from Romney that anti-Trump Republicans hold little influence in the party was on display when Trump’s endorsement helped JD Vance come out of nowhere to win the Ohio Republican Senate nomination. Vance was placing fourth and in single digits before Trump intervened, and easily won the primary with 32% of the vote.
Even other possible 2024 Presidential candidates understand how influential Trump’s endorsement is. Texas Senator Ted Cruz had supported the former Ohio Treasurer in the race who finished second with 24%.
This endorsement battle was viewed by some as a start of a proxy war between Trump and Cruz for the nomination. It is clear that Trump won this round easily.
“When Trump endorsed, Vance was in fourth place. And he rocketed to the front on the shoulders of Trump’s endorsement,” said Cruz. “It has been obvious for a long time that he has enormous influence in the party, that Republicans strongly support President Trump, and they care about his leadership.”
Trump proved how strong his endorsement is in Ohio to help Republican candidates win. Were you shocked that even Mitt Romney admitted how strong Trump is in the party?
