Incumbent North Carolina Congressional Representative and the youngest member of Congress, Madison Cawthorn, lost his seat on Tuesday after a string of attacks smeared him in the last few weeks.
Cawthorn has conceded to state Sen. Chuck Edwards by a thin margin in the Republican primary for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District.
Cawthorn, 26, grew to fame because of his story of overcoming injuries from a 2014 accident that left him a paraplegic.
Cawthorn was alienated from Republican leadership in his state and federally. In spring of 2022, he accused other GOP members of Congress going to sex parties and using cocaine. He later said that he retracted those statements and called them “exaggerated.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy addressed Cawthorn’s statements at the time as “frustrating” and said “there’s no evidence behind his statements.”
Cawthorn also experienced several bad viral moments that showed him humping another man’s face and he was charged with driving with a revoked license. We covered more of that on other stories on the Next News Network.
“When Madison was first elected to Congress, he did a great job,” Trump stated before the election. “Recently, he made some foolish mistakes, which I don’t believe he’ll make again … let’s give Madison a second chance!”
Trump tried to save Cawthorn on Sunday, but the Congressman had already spent most of his campaign money in recent weeks. There were no TV buys and he wasn’t seen campaigning.
Do you think that Madison Cawthorn was taken out by the GOP establishment or did he not run a good campaign?
