Most of us have a vision of Hell in our minds. Many think of it as being a burning place that never cools, thus the saying “burn in Hell.”
NASA thinks it will soon be able to see a planet as close to Hell as anything else humanity has ever seen.
Yes this planet is hot as Hell, but what’s equally if not more interesting about it is that it’s made of diamonds. As such, it’s worth is $29 nonillion. Most of us can’t even comprehend $1 billion, and suffice it to say, $29 nonillion is a lot more. In fact, if you were to write the number numerically, it would have thirty zeroes.
The planet is called 55 Cancri e and it was discovered in 2012 by scientists in Texas. It is estimated to be 50 light years away, and scientists expect to get their first real look at it in a few weeks, via the James Webb Space Telescope.
NASA has reported that, “[w]ith surface temperatures far above the melting point of typical rock-forming minerals, the day side of the planet is thought to be covered in oceans of lava.” NASA continued, “Imagine if Earth were much, much closer to the Sun. So close that an entire year lasts only a few hours. So close that gravity has locked one hemisphere in permanent searing daylight and the other in endless darkness. So close that the oceans boil away, rocks begin to melt, and the clouds rain lava.”
The James Webb Space Telescope is expected to be fully ready to go very soon and scientists plan to study this very hot, diamond planet this summer.

A planet made of diamonds sounds spectacular. And the spectacular James Webb Space Telescope is set to get some amazing images of this planted. The obvious issue is that 55 Cancri e is very, very, very hot. What would happen if humanity could get its hands on all that diamond? Would it be a good thing?
