Air Travel In Chaos With No Relief In Sight

Many people got a three-day weekend because of the Juneteenth federal holiday. A lot of people traveled and a lot of people were very disappointed with their experience.

More than 10,000 flights were delayed or canceled in the U.S. over the weekend. The flight changes were blamed on the weather. On Friday, a line of storms stretched from Mississippi to Virginia, which affected travelers at large hubs in Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington, D.C. and New York. Coincidentally, the chaos for travelers came just one day after airline executives met with U.S. transportation officials on how to stem flight disruptions, reported Fortune.

But it wasn’t only the bad weather that caused the travel mess. There still aren’t enough pilots and other staff so when things go wrong, there aren’t enough reserve crews to keep the air travel schedules on track.

Another holiday weekend is coming up in just a few weeks. The Fourth of July is a big time for travel in the United States, with many kids out of school for the summer. No one wants to get stuck in an airport with their kids in tow. But the flight problems won’t end there as airlines say they don’t have enough staff or flying capacity.

This isn’t just a U.S. phenomenon. Flights all over the world were hit with chaos as well. Twitter had many people tweeting about a pilot who was seen helping to load luggage onto a flight in the UK.

If your flight gets canceled the airline has to rebook you on the next available flight. But of course, they have to do that for every passenger on the canceled flight. If that doesn’t work for you, they have to give you a full refund, even if you purchased a nonrefundable ticket, reports the CBS Evening News.

With that in mind, here’s something you will want to save if you’re planning to travel at all this summer:

God bless that pilot who stepped in to help load luggage onto what we assume was the plane he was scheduled to fly. To think that airlines are that short staffed, however, is a bit frightening. Do you plan to travel by air this summer? If so, are you worried?
