Surveillance Shows That Police Didn’t Attempt to Open Classroom Doors During Uvalde School Massacre

It’s been about three weeks since the horrible tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and just about every day we hear more about how many things went wrong that day. A door was left unlocked, law enforcement took forever to go inside the school and the list goes on. Sadly, there’s another thing and it’s bad.

Surveillance footage shows that law enforcement didn’t even attempt to open the doors of the two classrooms where nineteen children and two teachers were mercilessly gunned down on May 24, 2022, according to law enforcement source close to the investigation who spoke with the San Antonio Express-News’s Brian Chasnoff. The source explained that “while the doors at Robb Elementary are designed to lock automatically from the inside and typically can only be opened with key, [the killer], carrying an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle, was able to enter Classroom 111 without any difficulty shortly after 11:30 a.m. that day, according to the footage.” The surveillance footage from inside Robb Elementary School during the May 24 massacre has not been publicly released, but has been seen by the Express-News, reports the Daily Mail.

The investigation into what went wrong has shown that there were 77 minutes between when the police entered the school and when they finally breached the door to classroom 111 and killed the eighteen year old gunman. During that 77 minutes, officers waited for a tactical team and tested keys on other doors, reports the Houston Chron.

“Each time I tried a key I was just praying,” said Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo. “When police originally approached the door, Ramos fired, striking two officers with shrapnel and forcing the group to retreat. However, it’s possible the door had malfunctioned, Chasnoff’s source said, and whether it was locked or unlocked the entire time police were hunting for a key is under investigation. Police eventually breached the door with a crowbar-like tool around 12:50 p.m.,” reports the Houston Chron.

Here’s the obvious question: what took so long to try the crowbar-like tool? Or any tool, for that matter? Or just try to open the door? It is beyond agonizing to think of those babies and their teachers locked in that room with that maniac. If it’s that agonizing to us, how beyond terrifying it must have been for them to be so helpless, with no one on the outside trying to get in. The moral is, it’s not guns that kill people, it’s incompetence that kills people. Do you agree?
