CNN Host Attacks Ana Navarro For Saying Abortion Is Necessary For Some Parents Pregnant With Special Needs Kids

Even people who are both on the same side of the abortion debate can have differences of opinion. Some people think abortion should be illegal at the point of fertilization while others think it’s ok to do up until there’s a detectable heartbeat. Two pro-choice celebrities recently also disagreed regarding a reason abortions should be allowed.

During a recent segment on CNN regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Ana Navarro commented on what she thinks should be a valid legal reason to obtain an abortion. When asked how she can support abortion rights, Navarro responded, “I am not anybody to tell you what you need to do with your life or with your uterus. I have a family with a lot of special needs kids. I have a brother who’s 57 and has the mental and motor skills of a one-year-old. And I know what that means financially, emotionally, physically for a family. And I know not all families can do it.”  She also talked about two special needs step-grandchildren in her family and remarked how difficult it can be for the families to receive services to help them. She even talked about how some parents of special needs kids have considered suicide because they can’t get any help.

CNN host and political commentator S.E. Cupp didn’t initially respond to what Navarro had said, but after some thought, she felt she had to. Cupp then took to Twitter. She tweeted: “It’s taken me a minute to decide whether I wanted to share this. But ultimately, iI felt like I had to. Yesterday, @ananavarro, you made an argument that one of the reasons you were pro-choice was because you knew children with special needs, in your family. So do I.”

Cupp continued: “You said you have a step-grand daughter with Down’s syndrome, and a “step-grandson who is very autistic.” And that “there are mothers and people who are in that society or in that community will tell you they’ve considered suicide because that’s how difficult it is to get help.”

Cupp added: “I have an autistic child. I have never met a parent of an autistic child or any parent of a special needs child who said they’d wished they’d aborted him or her.”

Cupp continued denouncing what Navarro had said, tweeting: “These children face enough stigmas and challenges. Please don’t use our incredible, special, wonderful, super-hero kids to make political arguments, especially about the benefits of abortion.”

Finally, Cupp said she is pro-choice “but don’t even for a second make it about our special needs kids.”

Parents are always very proud of their children, no matter what. Cupp took offense at Navarro suggesting that abortion should be legal if the child in utero has special needs. While it can be difficult for parents, especially lower-income parents, to access services, it should never be suggested that special needs babies are disposable. What do you think about what Navarro said?
