As of Jan. 1, Alabama became the latest state to allow concealed handgun carry without a background check.
A permit is no longer required to legally carry a concealed handgun in public under the new state law, according to WVTM 13 Birmingham. Permits are still available to those who wish to obtain them.
Here’s WVTM 13 with more:
After being introduced unsuccessfully for years in Montgomery, the proposal was finally approved in 2022. This time around, the creation of a “prohibited persons” database was key to the legislation’s passage.
In reference to the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, gun rights advocates call the legislation “constitutional carry.”
According to the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, 25 states now allow permitless carry as a result of the Alabama law.
As soon as the bill passed the legislature, Gov. Kay Ivey signed it. During her successful reelection campaign, she emphasized her support for gun rights, the Washington Examiner notes.
Gun owners in Alabama are rejoicing now that the state’s Constitutional Carry Law has officially taken effect, giving them freedom and peace of mind. Every citizen has a right to protect themselves or loved ones, and this right is enshrined in the Second Amendment. Common sense legislation such as this allows Americans to carry their firearms with legal protections while maintaining freedom. 25 states have benefited from similar laws that permit the permitless carry of handguns in public spaces, so it’s no surprise that Alabamans are elated to join them.
