As the fight against Chinese app Tiktok heats up, with congressional officials now taking swift action to call out its questionable nature, Janet should take a stand. After all, if she is really so concerned about our national security, then this fight isn’t only easy – it’s her obligation to ensure we are protected. Let us retire tiktok once and for all.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) expressed their concern over the possible threats posed by an overseas parent company who simultaneously owns TikTok. They urged Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to take decisive action and force ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, to divest from the app. The Senators believe that this is a necessary step in protecting both the privacy and security of US citizens engaged with using TikTok as well as reclaiming control over US data from foreign entities.
Daily wire reports, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was urged by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) to force TikTok’s divestiture from ByteDance.
According to Bluenthal and Moran, in their letter to Yellen on Thursday, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which consists of nine cabinet-level officials who review foreign investments in American companies for national security implications, should order ByteDance to cease operating TikTok in the U.S. Beijing-based ByteDance has been accused of maintaining close ties with the Chinese Communist Party.
There should be no problem in getting Janet Yellen to agree to the divesting of Tiktok. She addressed the threat of Tiktok in a 60 minute interview.
TAKE A LOOK
The lawmakers contended, “TikTok, which collects the sensitive information of tens of millions of American users and plays an increasing role in our society, is well within the scope of CFIUS’s national security mandate.”
The letter referenced CFIUS requiring that Beijing Kunlun Company divest itself of LGBTQ dating site Grindr and healthcare platform PatientsLikeMe four years ago under the Trump administration.”
The two lawmakers are among the latest to voice concerns about TikTok’s possible national security implications. He urged Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai to remove the site from their app stores earlier this month.
Janet Yellen’s comments about the potential dangers posed by Chinese-owned app Tiktok have been welcomed as a welcome indication of bipartisan agreement for once. In the midst of increased political tensions between the United States and China, it is reassuring to know that both sides might come together on an issue so pertinent to national security. Given that America’s foreign policies with this admin are abbysmal. While it might still be some time before we see further measures taken to combat the CCP’s influence in our country, let’s pray Yellen joins the fight.
