**A Graduation Ceremony Turns Tragic: Father and Son Gunned Down in Virginia**
Amidst the celebration of high school graduation, tragedy struck when gunshots ended the lives of a young graduate and his father. Caught in the chaos, the rest of their family experienced terror and heartache. This devastating incident underscores the need for community members to put an end to such senseless acts of violence.
On Tuesday evening, Huguenot High School’s class of 2023 students and their loved ones gathered at the Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia, for a momentous occasion – high school graduation. As people were rejoicing in this accomplishment, gunshots shattered the atmosphere of happiness in a nearby park. The aftermath left 18-year-old Shawn Jackson and his 36-year-old father, Lorenzo “Renzo” Smith, dead. The two were pronounced deceased shortly after the attack. Just 20 minutes earlier, Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras handed Jackson his diploma, only to witness the horrifying scene of Jackson receiving CPR while still dressed in his graduation gown.
Struggling to find appropriate words, Kamras lamented, “This is supposed to be a joyous day…And I beg of the entire community to stop, to just stop.” The tragic loss of these two lives reflects a shocking disregard for the sanctity of life.
