Governor Tim Walz is facing renewed pressure to explain how more than $110 million in alleged daycare fraud flourished under his watch after an independent journalist claims to have exposed the scheme in a single day of investigation.

Nick Shirley, a journalist known for his on-the-ground reporting, released a video this week documenting what he describes as widespread fraud within Minnesota's childcare assistance program—fraud allegedly linked to the state's Somali community. The findings have reignited fierce criticism of Walz's leadership and his administration's apparent failure to crack down on systemic abuse of taxpayer dollars.

One Day, One Journalist, Millions in Fraud

Shirley's investigation reportedly uncovered glaring red flags that state officials either missed or ignored for years. The journalist claims he was able to identify evidence of fraudulent daycare operations within hours—raising serious questions about why Minnesota's bureaucracy failed to detect or stop the abuse.

"If I can find this in one day, what has the state been doing for years?" Shirley asked in his viral video, which has garnered hundreds of thousands of views.

The alleged fraud involves daycare facilities billing the state for services never rendered, with investigators previously linking much of the abuse to a network operating within Minnesota's Somali immigrant community. Federal prosecutors have already charged dozens of individuals in connection with what has been called one of the largest pandemic-era fraud schemes in the nation.

Walz Administration Under Fire

Critics say the scandal reflects a pattern of negligence—or worse—by the Walz administration. Conservative lawmakers and commentators have long argued that Minnesota's generous welfare programs, combined with lax oversight, created a perfect environment for fraud to thrive.

Walz, who served as Kamala Harris's running mate in the failed 2024 presidential campaign, has attempted to distance himself from the scandal. His administration has pointed to federal investigations and claimed state agencies are cooperating fully. But for many Minnesotans, those explanations ring hollow.

"Tim Walz had years to fix this problem and did nothing," said one Minnesota Republican legislator. "Hardworking taxpayers were robbed, and his administration looked the other way."

A National Embarrassment

The daycare fraud scandal has become a symbol of government waste and incompetence that President Donald Trump highlighted during the 2024 campaign. Trump repeatedly pointed to Minnesota as an example of failed Democratic leadership, contrasting Walz's record with his own administration's commitment to rooting out fraud and protecting American tax dollars.

Now back in the White House, President Trump has directed federal agencies to prioritize accountability in pandemic-related spending, a move that could bring additional scrutiny to Minnesota's handling of relief funds.

For Tim Walz, the political fallout may be just beginning. As more details emerge and independent journalists continue to dig, the embattled governor will have to answer a simple question: How did over $110 million vanish on his watch—and why didn't anyone in his administration stop it?

No wonder he's scrambling - this video evidence is damning. When will politicians actually be held accountable for the fraud happening under their watch?

This is exactly why we need to audit EVERY government program. $110 million in fraud is absolutely unacceptable and Walz needs to answer for this mess. How many hardworking American families could have been helped with that money instead?

Completely agree! This is our tax dollars being stolen while legitimate families struggle to afford childcare.

I've been saying for years that the oversight in MN is a joke. This proves it.
