A Somali refugee who lasted just 72 hours on Maine's Lewiston City Council has quit amid a brewing scandal involving felony gun charges and allegations that his nonprofit organization misappropriated tens of thousands of dollars meant for mass shooting victims.

Iman Osman, 36, who won election to represent Ward 5 in November, announced his resignation this week — but instead of taking accountability for the serious criminal allegations against him, he's playing the race card and blaming his exit on 'racism' and 'vitriol.'

According to reports, Osman faces felony charges for receiving stolen property and theft by unauthorized taking related to firearms. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Social media users are exposing even more troubling details about Osman's background.

"Somali refugee Iman Osman stepped down from Lewiston, Maine's City Council days after being sworn in, after reports of his nonprofit received $65K meant for mass shooting victims. He also has been charged with a felony," posted @TheKaterPotater on social media.

The allegations get worse. Additional reports indicate Osman provided a false address and faces residency scrutiny, raising serious questions about whether he was even eligible to serve in the first place.

"Lewiston Maine, Iman Osman, indicted on illegal firearm charges and giving a false address Somali city councilor resigns amid indictment, residency scrutiny 72 hours after being sworn into office," noted @MoniFunGirl.

This scandal perfectly illustrates what happens when woke politicians prioritize diversity over vetting and accountability. How did someone facing felony charges slip through the cracks to win elected office? Where was the media scrutiny during his campaign?

Lewiston residents deserve better than a city councilor who allegedly steals guns and misuses funds meant for shooting victims, then cries racism when caught. This is exactly the kind of failure that President Trump's America First agenda seeks to prevent through proper vetting and accountability.

The real question is: how many other elected officials across America have similar skeletons in their closets that the mainstream media refuses to investigate?

What kind of nonprofit scandal are we talking about here? The article mentions it but I'd like to know more details about how taxpayer money might have been involved.

Thank goodness they resigned before doing more damage. How did this person even get elected in the first place with this background?

Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.

Gun theft charges? That's a federal crime and completely disqualifying for public service.

I live here and this whole situation has been a mess from day one. My neighbors and I saw red flags but nobody wanted to listen because of political correctness.

Sorry you had to deal with that. Local voices should always be heard first.

The nonprofit angle is what really concerns me. These organizations get millions in grants and there's barely any oversight. We need full transparency on where every dollar went.

Couldn't agree more. Time for a full audit of all related organizations.

This is exactly why we need proper vetting processes before putting people in positions of public trust. The citizens of Lewiston deserve better than this.

Absolutely right. Background checks should be standard for any public office.
