The federal prosecutor who exposed one of the largest fraud cases in Minnesota history has resigned, dealing a blow to ongoing efforts to root out corruption in the Gopher State's bloated government programs.
Joseph Thompson, the 47-year-old career prosecutor appointed by President Trump in June to serve as acting U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota, led the explosive "Feeding Our Future" investigation that uncovered a staggering $250 million fraud scheme targeting taxpayer-funded programs meant to feed children.
Thompson made it clear from day one that he was going after the "shocking and unacceptable levels of fraud in our state government programs" - and boy, did he deliver. His team's investigation revealed how corrupt actors exploited COVID-era meal programs, stealing millions while kids went hungry.
Social media users are already mourning the loss of one of the few prosecutors willing to take on systemic fraud. Twitter user @kathie_freedom1 highlighted Thompson's impact, posting: "Top federal prosecutor who exposed massive $250M Minnesota fraud case steps down from position. Joe Thompson was appointed by President Donald Trump in May and led the massive Feeding Our Future investigation."
But here's where it gets interesting - reports suggest Thompson's resignation may be connected to an ICE shooting investigation, according to social media posts. User @unixdoss noted: "Joe Thompson, Minnesota's top federal fraud prosecutor, quits over ICE shooting probe."
"This resignation represents a significant loss for Minnesota's fight against fraud," sources close to the investigation tell Next News Network.
Even Minnesota Governor Tim Walz - hardly a Trump ally - admitted Thompson's departure was a "loss" for the state, as reported by @echopress on social media.
Thompson was later relegated to assistant attorney status following the Senate confirmation of Daniel Rosen, but continued his fraud-fighting mission even in a reduced role.
The Real Question Patriots Should Ask
Was Thompson forced out because he was getting too close to exposing the full scope of corruption in Minnesota's government programs? When a prosecutor this effective suddenly resigns, Americans deserve answers about what - or who - might be behind his departure.
