New Jersey Democrats are walking straight into a political minefield as progressive activist Analilia Mejia gains momentum in her bid to replace moderate Democrat Mikie Sherrill in the House of Representatives—a move that could gift wrap another seat for Republicans in 2026.
Mejia, who previously served as national political director for Bernie Sanders-style progressive campaigns, is riding a wave of support from the same far-left activists who have driven the Democratic Party off a cliff in recent elections. But her radical positions put her completely out of step with the centrist voters who elected Sherrill in the first place.
This is exactly the kind of political malpractice that helped deliver President Trump his landslide victory and Republican control of Congress. While smart politicians move toward the center after getting shellacked at the polls, Democrats are doubling down on the same woke agenda that Americans decisively rejected.
Recipe for Republican Victory
Sherrill's district has been competitive precisely because she maintained moderate positions that appealed to suburban voters. Now Democrats want to replace her with a progressive who will rubber-stamp every piece of radical legislation Nancy Pelosi and AOC can dream up.
"This is a gift to Republicans," said one Democratic strategist who requested anonymity. "Mejia represents everything voters are tired of—identity politics, big government spending, and out-of-touch progressive ideology."
The progressive takeover of Democratic primaries has become a nationwide problem for the party. Time and again, far-left candidates win primaries only to get crushed in general elections by Republicans who appeal to common-sense voters.
"Democrats never learn. They keep nominating candidates who sound great at faculty lounges but bomb with working families," observed a veteran political analyst.
For Republicans, Mejia's potential nomination represents a golden opportunity to flip another blue seat red. President Trump's coattails remain strong, and voters continue rejecting the progressive agenda that has brought us inflation, open borders, and cultural chaos.
Will New Jersey Democrats wake up before it's too late, or will they hand Republicans another easy victory? Based on their track record, smart money says they'll choose ideology over electability every single time.
