House Democrats' top attack dog against the Trump administration couldn't even stay awake for his own hearing. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, was caught on camera appearing to doze off while Attorney General Pam Bondi delivered her opening statement during a high-profile congressional hearing.
The embarrassing moment instantly went viral on social media, with Republicans and conservative commentators pouncing on the 79-year-old Democrat's apparent nap time during what should have been a critical opportunity to challenge the Trump administration's top law enforcement official.
"This is the man Democrats are counting on to take on Attorney General Bondi?" one Republican aide told reporters. "He can't even keep his eyes open during her opening remarks. Maybe it's time for New York to send someone who can actually do the job."
Nadler, who has made a career out of grandstanding against President Trump and his allies, looked visibly tired and disengaged as Bondi outlined the Justice Department's priorities under the Trump-Vance administration. The optics couldn't have been worse for Democrats already struggling to mount effective opposition to Trump's second-term agenda.
Social Media Erupts
Conservative social media users wasted no time turning Nadler's sleepy performance into meme material, with many pointing out the irony of Democrats claiming to be the "resistance" while their senior members literally sleep on the job.
"Sleepy Jerry makes Sleepy Joe look energetic," one popular post read, referencing the nickname Trump gave to former President Biden.
This isn't the first time Nadler has faced scrutiny for his performance during high-stakes hearings. The longtime congressman has previously been criticized for his handling of Trump impeachment proceedings and other major legislative moments.
As Attorney General Bondi continues implementing President Trump's law-and-order agenda, Americans deserve elected officials who can at least stay awake long enough to ask meaningful questions. Instead, we got another reminder of why voters chose to clean house in 2024.
How can Democrats claim to be holding this administration accountable when their own leadership is literally asleep at the wheel?
