Rep. Bennie Thompson, the partisan Democrat who turned the January 6th committee into a political witch hunt against President Trump, easily won his primary Tuesday night in Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District. The 78-year-old swamp creature has now positioned himself for what would be his 18th term in Congress—a testament to everything wrong with career politicians in Washington.
Thompson's landslide primary victory comes as no surprise in a district that has been gerrymandered to keep Democrats in power for decades. But here's what should outrage every American: after more than 30 years of Thompson's so-called "representation," Mississippi's 2nd District remains one of the poorest and most economically depressed areas in the entire nation.
This is the same Bennie Thompson who spent the last several years obsessing over President Trump instead of fighting for the families back home who desperately need jobs, better schools, and economic opportunity. While Trump was building the greatest economy in American history, Thompson was busy playing partisan games and collecting his taxpayer-funded paycheck.
A Record of Failure
What exactly does Thompson have to show for three decades in Congress? His district consistently ranks among the worst in America for poverty, education, and economic mobility. Yet instead of working across the aisle to bring real solutions to his constituents, Thompson chose to chair the sham January 6th committee that violated due process and constitutional rights.
The irony is rich: Thompson lectures Americans about "democracy" while presiding over a district where Democratic machine politics have kept real change at bay for generations. Where are the good-paying jobs? Where are the thriving businesses? Where is the hope for young families trying to build a better life?
Meanwhile, under President Trump's leadership, we're already seeing manufacturing jobs return to America, energy independence restored, and economic opportunities flourishing in Republican-led states across the nation.
Republicans are still determining their nominee to challenge Thompson in November, but one thing is clear: Mississippi's 2nd District deserves better than another term of failed leadership from a career politician more interested in attacking Trump than delivering results for the people who elected him.
