The hits keep coming for Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), the Democrat who famously got caught up with Chinese spy Christine "Fang-Fang" Fang and is now facing fresh allegations of playing games with his legal residency as he runs for California governor.
Opposition research conducted by billionaire Tom Steyer—Swalwell's own Democrat rival in the gubernatorial race—reveals that the congressman rents just a single room in a Livermore, California home owned by a family of three, yet lists that address as his official residence. Talk about convenient timing for a politician who needs to maintain California residency while spending most of his time in Washington swamp circles.
Another Day, Another Swalwell Scandal
This latest controversy adds another chapter to Swalwell's already questionable track record. Remember, this is the same guy who had such a cozy relationship with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang that it raised serious national security concerns. Fang reportedly helped fundraise for Swalwell's campaigns and even placed an intern in his congressional office before fleeing back to China when the heat got too intense.
Now we're supposed to believe Swalwell's residency arrangement is totally above board? The optics couldn't be worse for a man who already showed incredibly poor judgment when it came to foreign influence operations.
What's particularly rich is that this damaging information is coming from within his own party. When your fellow Democrats are doing opposition research that exposes your shady residential arrangements, you know your political future is in serious trouble.
California Deserves Better
Californians are already dealing with sky-high taxes, rampant homelessness, and businesses fleeing the state in droves. The last thing they need is another politician who can't even be straight about where he actually lives.
Between the Fang-Fang fiasco and these residency games, one has to wonder: what other corners has Swalwell been cutting? If he's willing to play fast and loose with basic residency requirements, what would he do as governor of America's most populous state?
Patriots deserve elected officials who are transparent about even the most basic aspects of their lives. Swalwell's pattern of questionable decisions should be disqualifying for any voter who values integrity in their leaders.
