House Republicans delivered a crushing blow to Washington D.C.'s revenue-generating speed trap operation, advancing legislation that would strip the swamp city of its authority to operate traffic cameras and ban right turns on red lights.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform passed the "Stop DC CAMERA Act" by a vote of 21 to 19, with every single Republican voting to end what many Americans see as nothing more than a cash grab disguised as public safety.

This is exactly the kind of federal overreach that conservatives can get behind – stopping local government tyranny that's been bleeding hardworking Americans dry for years. D.C.'s camera network has become infamous for generating millions in revenue while doing little to actually improve safety.

GOP Takes Aim at Revenue Racket

For too long, Washington D.C. has operated like a predatory municipality, using traffic cameras to fund bloated government operations on the backs of commuters and visitors. These aren't safety measures – they're digital highway robbery.

The legislation would also prohibit D.C.'s ban on right turns at red lights, another restriction that seems designed more to generate ticket revenue than protect pedestrians. How many law-abiding citizens have been slapped with hefty fines for safely turning right after a complete stop?

"This is about protecting the rights of American drivers from government overreach," the bill's supporters argue, and they're absolutely right.

Democrats Defend the Swamp

Predictably, all 19 Democrats on the committee voted to protect D.C.'s camera cash cow. The party that claims to fight for working families once again sided with big government revenue schemes over the taxpayers getting squeezed.

This vote perfectly illustrates the difference between the parties: Republicans fighting to get government off people's backs, while Democrats defend every revenue-generating scheme that grows government power.

The bill now heads to the full House, where the Republican majority should make quick work of this common-sense reform. It's time to end D.C.'s digital shakedown once and for all.

When will Americans finally be free from government's endless schemes to pick our pockets?

Does anyone know if this applies to all the cameras throughout DC or just certain ones? I drive through the city regularly for work and would love to know the scope of this victory.

FINALLY! These speed cameras were nothing but a cash grab targeting working families trying to get to work on time. Thank you House GOP for standing up to DC's money-hungry bureaucrats!

Exactly! I got hit with 3 tickets in one month on my commute - $450 down the drain for going 8 mph over.

It's about constitutional due process too. These cameras deny you the right to face your accuser in court.

This is HUGE! Those cameras generated over $100 million in revenue last year - pure highway robbery. Now maybe they'll focus on actual public safety instead of treating drivers like ATMs.
