Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner has thrown down the gauntlet in the 2026 gubernatorial race, calling for a permanent federal ban on Muslim immigration and claiming Islam is fundamentally incompatible with American law and values.

Renner, who served as Speaker from 2022-2024, made the explosive comments during a campaign event in Jacksonville, directly challenging the political establishment's approach to immigration and national security. His remarks come as President Trump's mass deportation agenda continues gaining momentum nationwide.

"We need to have an honest conversation about what we're importing into this country," Renner declared. "Islam as a political system - not just a religion - is fundamentally at odds with our Constitution, our legal system, and our way of life. We have a right and responsibility to protect American citizens."

The former Speaker's comments immediately drew fire from Democrats and establishment Republicans, but found support among grassroots conservatives who argue America's immigration system has been weaponized against traditional American values.

"For too long, politicians have been afraid to speak the truth about incompatible ideologies being imported through our broken immigration system. That ends now," Renner stated.

Renner's proposal would require federal legislation and represents one of the most aggressive immigration positions taken by any major GOP candidate since Trump's initial Muslim travel ban proposal in 2015. The former Speaker argues that Islamic law (Sharia) creates an inherent conflict with American constitutional principles.

While critics cry "Islamophobia," Renner's supporters point to European immigration disasters and rising concerns about radical Islamic influence in American communities. They argue that previous "moderate" approaches have failed to adequately screen for ideological compatibility.

The proposal puts other GOP gubernatorial candidates in a tough spot - do they embrace Renner's hardline stance or risk being labeled as weak on immigration and national security?

As Trump's second-term agenda reshapes American politics, Renner's bombshell proposal raises a critical question: Should America prioritize religious tolerance or ideological compatibility when determining who gets to become an American citizen?
