The Maryland House of Delegates voted Friday to consider expelling Republican Del. Christopher Bouchat for missing legislative sessions, in what appears to be another partisan witch hunt while actual Democrat corruption gets a free pass nationwide.
Republican Del. Lauren Arikan introduced the resolution targeting Bouchat, claiming he has skipped floor votes and committee meetings. But here's where this story gets interesting, Patriots - Bouchat apparently tried to make things right by offering to donate his salary to charities and even left blank $1,000 checks on three lawmakers' desks, according to social media reports.
As one Twitter user noted: "Bouchat ... offered to donate his salary to charities of their choosing. Eventually, Bouchat left blank $1,000 checks on the three lawmakers' desks, according to Maryland Matters." The lawmakers quickly voided the checks and alerted ethics counsel instead of accepting the gesture.
Arikan defended her expulsion effort by saying, "We have a lot of folks on the floor today who are fighting for their lives. They are sick. They may have cancer." But where's this same energy when Democrats face actual corruption charges?
The Real Corruption Gets Ignored
While Maryland Democrats waste time targeting a Republican for attendance issues, real corruption by Democrats continues unchecked. Take Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who was "found guilty of 25 ethics violations" and "faces calls to resign over misuse of COVID-19 funds," with lawmakers warning "Congress may vote to expel her," according to social media reports.
That's 25 ETHICS VIOLATIONS involving taxpayer COVID funds, folks. But somehow a Republican missing votes is the priority for expulsion proceedings?
This double standard perfectly encapsulates everything wrong with our political system. Democrats can steal COVID relief money meant for struggling Americans, but Republicans get the boot for poor attendance. The resolution against Bouchat will likely die in the Rules Committee, but the damage to our constitutional republic continues.
When will Americans demand equal justice under law instead of this partisan theater? The Trump-Vance administration is cleaning house in Washington - maybe it's time for Maryland voters to do the same in Annapolis.
