In a stunning display of Republican infighting, the Maryland House of Delegates voted Friday to consider expelling one of their own GOP members, revealing the kind of internal chaos that has plagued the party at the state level while Trump consolidates power in Washington.
Republican Del. Lauren Arikan introduced a resolution targeting fellow Republican Christopher Bouchat for his chronic absenteeism from floor votes and committee meetings. The move has raised serious questions about why Republicans are wasting time attacking each other instead of focusing on the radical Democrat agenda destroying Maryland.
The situation took a bizarre turn when Bouchat attempted damage control by offering to donate his salary to charities. According to social media reports, "Bouchat offered to donate his salary to charities of their choosing. Eventually, Bouchat left blank $1,000 checks on the three lawmakers' desks." When his colleagues refused this gesture, "he simply stopped showing up anyway."
"We have a lot of folks on the floor today who are fighting for their lives. They are sick. They may have cancer," said Arikan of her measure to expel Bouchat.
While Arikan's frustration may be understandable, this Republican-on-Republican attack highlights everything wrong with the party establishment. Instead of uniting behind Trump's America First agenda and fighting the Democrats who have turned Maryland into a liberal wasteland, these lawmakers are busy policing attendance records.
The timing couldn't be worse. As Trump works to implement his second-term agenda with Republican control of Congress, state-level GOP infighting only serves to weaken the movement. Meanwhile, Democrats continue to face their own ethics scandals - Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was recently "found guilty of 25 ethics violations" over "misuse of COVID-19 funds," yet receives far less scrutiny from the media.
Patriots deserve better than this petty squabbling. Maryland Republicans should be laser-focused on supporting Trump's deportation efforts and fighting the state's sanctuary policies, not engaging in circular firing squads that only help the Democrats.
