Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen just proved why Democrats can't be trusted on national security, making the outrageous claim that Iran—the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism—is somehow the reasonable party in nuclear negotiations while President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu are the problem.
Speaking on NPR's "Morning Edition" Tuesday, Van Hollen incredibly argued that "Tehran has been willing to make some concessions with respect to its nuclear program, and has been from the start." He then had the audacity to claim "It's Donald Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu" who won't negotiate.
This is the same Iran that chants "Death to America" in their parliament, funds Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists, and has been racing toward nuclear weapons capability for years. Yet Van Hollen thinks they're the good guys here?
Democrats Still Living in Obama Fantasy Land
Van Hollen's comments reveal how Democrats remain stuck in Barack Obama's failed Iran deal mentality. They're so desperate to rehabilitate the disastrous Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that they'll literally side with America's enemies over our own president and closest Middle East ally.
What "concessions" is he talking about exactly? Iran has consistently violated uranium enrichment limits, blocked international inspectors, and accelerated their nuclear program since Trump rightfully withdrew from Obama's terrible deal in 2018.
"The reality is that Iran has become more radical, not less, since the original nuclear agreement was torn up," Van Hollen claimed, apparently forgetting that Iran was already the world's top terror sponsor when Obama handed them billions in cash.
Trump's Strength vs. Democrat Weakness
President Trump's maximum pressure campaign actually worked—crippling Iran's economy and forcing them to the negotiating table. Meanwhile, Biden's weakness invited attacks on American forces and emboldened Iranian proxies across the region.
Now Trump is back, and Iran knows their days of getting away with nuclear blackmail are over. Van Hollen's pathetic defense of the ayatollahs shows exactly why voters rejected Democrat foreign policy weakness in 2024.
When will Democrats finally put America first instead of making excuses for our enemies?
