President Trump announced Friday that he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, effective immediately.
He posted the announcement to Truth Social:
"I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them 'alive.' Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS! Media Outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they're covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow."
Asked about the decision later that afternoon, the President told reporters that "our country has to have honestness," and said the banned outlets "purposely write negative things, and they do that because they want to try and diminish the Republicans and a Republican administration."
What the pool reports actually show
Here is the part that has gone almost entirely unreported.
According to the in-town White House press pool report filed at 4:00 PM Friday by TIME's Philip Wang, the announcement had not been carried out on the ground at the time it was made:
"Earlier before the pool gathered for the announcement, there was no one getting evicted from the press briefing room. Your pooler has asked the White House press office for further clarification on the POTUS' Truth Social post."
The declaration came first. The enforcement did not immediately follow.
Who is in the room now
The official White House daily guidance for Monday, September 21 lists the in-town pool as Hearst on television; AP, AFP, the New York Times, Reuters and Getty on photos; the Washington Blade on print; the Daily Caller as secondary print; AURN on radio; and the Lila Rose Show as new media.
The out-of-town travel pool lists the Daily Mail on print, with Bloomberg, Reuters and The Hill as additional print, the BBC on radio, and GB News as new media.
None of the three named outlets appear on Monday's schedule. The in-town pool rotates daily, so a single day's roster is not by itself proof of permanent removal, but the composition is notable, and independent and new-media outlets are plainly in the rotation.
The argument being made
Vice President JD Vance has been direct about the administration's reasoning. In footage circulating over the weekend, he confronts CNN over its handling of anonymous sourcing:
"You took the words of unnamed FBI agents and put them on your network as if they were the gospel truth."
Why this matters
Independent outlets have spent a decade being told that the briefing room belongs to the legacy networks. Those seats are being reassigned in real time, and they are going to independent media.
Whether this survives the legal challenge that is almost certain to follow is a separate question. CNN sued the first Trump administration over the revocation of a single hard pass, and won. This is a categorically larger action.
