Former Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has lauded President Donald Trump for his critical intervention during a period of intense tensions between Pakistan and India. Speaking in an official capacity, Sharif credited Trump with saving "hundreds of millions of lives in South Asia" by stepping in decisively when the threat of war loomed large between the nuclear-armed rivals.
Trump's Timely Intervention
Sharif highlighted that a year prior, Pakistan had faced what he termed 'external aggression' from India, accusing the latter of acting under a false pretext. In response, Pakistan invoked Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, asserting its right to self-defense. Sharif praised the Pakistani armed forces, under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their professionalism and successful defense efforts.
However, Sharif reserved his highest praise for President Trump's "resolute and visionary leadership" during the crisis. He emphasized that Trump's timely action came as Pakistan and India 'stood at the brink of an all-out war.' According to him, Trump's intervention was decisive, preventing what could have been a catastrophic confrontation.
Sharif remarked, "And who knows, Mr. President, the extent of devastation that could have taken place had President Trump not stepped in at this critical moment with clarity of thought and action." This acknowledgment underscores the impact of Trump's diplomacy in preventing escalation in a highly volatile region.
