Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to deliver a major address Wednesday from the ancient ruins of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, where he will issue an urgent call for the renewal of Western civilization — a speech his own State Department is billing as a direct challenge to the forces of decline, globalism, and cultural surrender.

According to Fox News Digital, the speech is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET — 6:30 p.m. local time in Greece — and will take place against the backdrop of the Acropolis, the ancient citadel that has come to symbolize the birth of democracy and Western thought. Rubio is on the second leg of a three-nation tour of NATO allies, having already visited Iceland, with Portugal scheduled as his final stop on Thursday.

The State Department did not mince words about the stakes. Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary for global public affairs, told Fox News Digital that Rubio will "call upon Americans and Europeans alike to join together in a great renewal of the Western spirit — an inheritance stretching from Athens and Rome to Christendom to the founding of the American Republic."

Johnson added that Rubio will point to ancient Greece as "the first full expression of the qualities that would come to define the West: curiosity, courage, ambition, and a restless spirit of exploration and discovery of the unknown."

But the speech — delivered from the Pnyx, the hill where the ancient Athenian assembly once gathered, according to the Greek newspaper eKathimerini — is expected to go far beyond historical reflection. Rubio plans to warn that too much of the West has forgotten those essential qualities, and he will urge allies to reject the seductive pull of decline.

"Secretary Rubio will warn that too much of our civilisation has forgotten these essential qualities, and urge our allies across the West to join the United States in rejecting decline, defending our shared heritage, and confronting a new era of great-power competition together," the State Department said, according to Kathimerini.

The secretary is also expected to take direct aim at the globalist orthodoxy that has infected so much of modern foreign policy. In excerpts distributed by the State Department and reported by the Associated Press, Rubio plans to say: "It has become fashionable today to believe that enlightened foreign policy means prioritizing the 'global community' over one's own people. Here, too, we have much more to learn from the men of Ancient Greece. They knew that there was nothing selfish or wrong about loyalty to your nation, nor in fighting to defend its interests above all else."

"Against that backdrop, then, as now, many came to believe that the West's age of dominance had come to an end, and that our future was destined to be a faint and feeble echo of our past. But together, our predecessors recognized that decline was a choice, and it was a choice they refused to make." — Secretary of State Marco Rubio, excerpt from February 2026 Munich Security Conference speech

The address builds on a theme Rubio has hammered throughout his tenure at Foggy Bottom. At the Munich Security Conference in February, he delivered a speech that earned a standing ovation from European leaders and racked up millions of views online. One popular X user described it at the time as "one of the greatest" speeches by a Secretary of State in decades.

In that Munich address, Rubio recounted how the West had expanded across the globe for five centuries before World War II left Europe in ruins. He noted that "godless communist revolutions" caused many to believe the West's dominance was finished — a sentiment he forcefully rejected then and is expected to reject again Wednesday.

The timing of the speech is notable. It comes as Vice President JD Vance and Rubio are widely seen as the leading contenders to carry President Trump's America First mantle into the future. The Republican Party faces stiff challenges in next month's congressional midterm elections, and the Athens address will undoubtedly elevate Rubio's profile on the world stage.

Rubio's remarks may also be viewed in some quarters as a follow-on to Vance's blistering Munich speech from last year, in which the vice president excoriated European leaders for allowing unchecked immigration and for their overreliance on American military might.

Not everyone is cheering. Left-wing groups, including a communist labor union, organized protests in Athens ahead of the speech, with organizers claiming similar demonstrations were held in at least a dozen other Greek cities. Police banned public demonstrations in central Athens on Wednesday. Many European governments have rejected the Trump administration's criticisms, accusing the U.S. of hypocrisy and labeling its staunch anti-immigration stance as racist.

During his visit, Rubio also announced a new counterterrorism partnership between the United States and Greece, highlighting the administration's focus on practical security cooperation alongside its broader cultural message.

Our Take

Marco Rubio is doing something no Secretary of State in recent memory has had the courage to do: he is naming the enemy. And the enemy isn't just China or Iran or Russia — it's the ideology of decline that has infected the West from within. The idea that America should apologize for its greatness. The idea that borders are racist. The idea that the "global community" matters more than the American people. The idea that our history is something to be ashamed of rather than defended.

Rubio understands what too many career diplomats and Davos globalists refuse to admit: Western civilization wasn't built by accident. It was built by men and women who believed in something — in God, in country, in the radical idea that human beings are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.

The choice Rubio is presenting to Americans and Europeans is simple: renew or retreat. Fight for your heritage or let it crumble. And frankly, the fact that he's giving this speech at the Acropolis — literally standing where democracy was born — while communists riot in the streets below tells you everything you need to know about which side they're on.

Patriots, this is the fight of our lifetime. The West didn't survive the Persians at Thermopylae, the Nazis at Normandy, and the Soviets in the Cold War just to surrender to a bunch of tenured professors and unelected bureaucrats who think America is the problem.

Rubio gets it. Vance gets it. Trump gets it. The question is: do you?

Rubio is digging into the roots of where our democratic ideals came from. It's about preserving what made us great in the first place.
