BOMBSHELL: Bessent Brings JUDY SHELTON Into Treasury as China Advisor — The Fed Pick Democrats Blocked

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has hired Judy Shelton — President Donald Trump's former pick for the Federal Reserve Board whose nomination the Senate blocked — as an advisor to the Treasury Department, with a portfolio aimed squarely at China.

"Shelton will advise the Secretary on currency policy, with a particular focus on evaluating financial conditions in China," the Treasury Department said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The hire was first reported by CNBC and confirmed by Treasury. POLITICO reported that Shelton has been a longtime advocate for tying the dollar's value to gold — a policy the United States fully abandoned in 1971.

Shelton previously led the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the National Endowment for Democracy, according to the Treasury Department. She has also worked as a fellow at the Independent Institute and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, per Reuters.

The résumé is not why her name rings a bell in Washington. Trump tapped Shelton for a vacant Fed seat during his first term, and her nomination hit roadblocks over bipartisan concerns that her perceived partisanship could imperil the Fed's independence — objections raised by senators in both parties, not just Democrats. The Senate never confirmed her.

Now she lands at Treasury, working under a secretary who has spent 2026 steering tariff and currency policy. Her assignment — evaluating financial conditions in China — puts her at the center of the administration's economic confrontation with Beijing, which has been the throughline of Trump's second-term trade posture.

The portfolio matters for a simple reason. Currency policy is where tariffs, capital flows and central bank maneuvering collide. A Treasury advisor tasked with reading China's financial condition is being asked, in effect, to help answer whether Beijing's economy is as resilient as its official numbers claim — a question with direct consequences for tariffs, export controls and American businesses pricing goods tied to Chinese supply chains.

Shelton's confirmation history also makes the hire politically charged. Senate critics on both sides of the aisle argued during her Fed fight that she was too closely aligned with Trump politically to serve as an independent monetary policymaker. Putting her in a Treasury counselor role sidesteps that confirmation process entirely: Treasury advisors are not Senate-confirmed positions, meaning she takes the job without a floor vote.

It is not yet known what specific policy recommendations Shelton will make, whether she will work on dollar policy beyond China, or how her role interacts with the Federal Reserve, which sets interest rates independently of Treasury. Treasury's statement limited her remit to currency policy and China.

Also unstated: whether her gold-standard advocacy — a position outside mainstream central banking for five decades — will shape actual policy, or whether it reflects her broader intellectual orientation rather than an administration plan. POLITICO noted her longtime support for linking the dollar to gold; the Treasury statement did not mention gold.

The Fed declined to comment, according to CNBC. Next News Network has not independently verified any private discussions surrounding the hiring.

What is clear is the direction the administration is signaling. Bessent, confirmed as Treasury Secretary in the Trump-Vance administration, has been building out a team oriented around confronting Beijing. Reuters reported that Shelton's hire was announced Friday.

The dollar's role as the world's reserve currency has been a recurring theme in Trump-aligned economic circles, and China's push to reduce dollar dependence in trade settlement has been a quiet but persistent counter-effort for years. Shelton's assignment reads as a response to both.

Our Take

This is a hire the establishment will not like, and that is precisely the point.

Judy Shelton was blocked from a Fed seat by a bipartisan coalition of senators who decided her ideas were too far outside the club's comfort zone. Now she has a desk at Treasury and China in her portfolio. The men and women who stopped her from setting interest rates do not get to decide she cannot read Beijing's balance sheet.

Remember who runs the Fed. For years, Americans have watched the central bank maneuver on interest rates, framing every decision as dispassionate expertise while working families got crushed with inflation and wiped out with high borrowing costs. Shelton questioned that orthodoxy. They punished her for it. That tells you more about the Senate than it tells you about Judy Shelton.

China is the real target here, and it should worry the globalists. For decades, one faction inside Washington wanted to manage China by integrating it into the dollar system and hoping it would play by the rules. It did not. Beijing built an economy half outside that system and quietly built alternatives to it. Having a Treasury advisor whose job is to evaluate exactly how strong China actually is — and to feed that into U.S. currency policy — is long overdue.

So watch what happens next. Watch whether this administration moves on the dollar, on gold, or on China's currency tricks. Watch who tries to stop it. And ask yourself: if Judy Shelton's ideas are really as dangerous as the Senate claimed in 2020, why was she able to walk into a top Treasury role just six years later?
