DNC'S 'BIG TENT' COVERS FOR SOCIALISTS: Ken Martin Refuses to Disavow DSA as GOP Pegs $49 TRILLION Price Tag

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin on Monday refused to shut the door on democratic socialists joining his party's coalition, defending a "big tent" strategy and insisting Democrats must keep expanding rather than purge the far-left faction ahead of the midterm elections.

Martin made the comments during a Monday interview on MSNOW, where anchor Peter Alexander pressed him on whether the party pays a price for its associations with the Democratic Socialists of America. According to a transcript of the exchange, Alexander tried to interject, "And sometimes, is there a middle ground, though, when Americans see that…"

"No, not at all, because that's where the vast majority of Americans are at," Martin replied. "Maybe right in the middle, or a little center-left, or a little center-right. But it doesn't mean we can't bring new voices into the party, right? Of course, we have to keep growing and we have to keep expanding this tent."

"So let me just say, I've always taken a big tent approach on how you build a party." — DNC Chairman Ken Martin, quoted by The Post Millennial

The Republican National Committee wasted no time turning Martin's words into a cudgel, writing on X: "Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin embraces far-Left radicals who want to abolish the police, prisons, and borders."

What the DSA Actually Wants

The DSA has advocated for policies that include abolishing police departments, dismantling prisons and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), eliminating immigration restrictions, and expanding public ownership of industry. Those positions are a matter of the organization's public platform, not an invention of its critics.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump's Council of Economic Advisers released a report estimating that adopting seven major DSA policies would add $49 trillion to federal deficits over 10 years — equivalent to more than $350,000 per American household.

Martin did not address that figure directly during the MSNOW hit. Instead, he pivoted to affordability and health care, saying Democrats are focused on "making sure that people can afford their lives and actually achieve economic opportunity and build a better life for their family."

"We're talking about health care access, making sure, at a time when we see premiums doubling and tripling across the country and people's health care access disappearing, that we are fighting for health care," Martin said. "And we're also talking about fixing this corrupt system that only actually benefits the wealthy and the powerful at the expense of the working class. That's what Democrats are fighting for. And that's the agenda we're going to deliver in 24 days once we're in control."

Democrats Split on the Label

Martin's insistence stands in contrast to many mainstream Democrats, who have scrambled to distance themselves from the socialist label — pointing to their stated support for capitalism and social democracy even as the party's left flank grows bolder about its ambitions.

The ranking Democrat's refusal to draw a line drew immediate GOP fire, and it lands just weeks before voters head to the polls. Republicans have repeatedly tied Democratic candidates to the DSA, betting that voters in competitive districts see the association as disqualifying rather than inclusive.

Coverage of the exchange was carried by Fox News Politics, 930 WFMD Free Talk, The Post Millennial, and Spreely News, among others.

What Martin did not say Monday is where the limit sits. Asked directly whether democratic socialists are a liability, he rejected the premise entirely — a position Republicans will now quote back to every Democratic candidate who has spent the cycle trying to deny the same association.

Our Take

There is a difference between a big tent and a tent where nobody can tell you what time it is.

When a party chair is asked point-blank whether socialists who want to abolish the police, ICE, and the prison system belong in his coalition, the answer should be a two-letter word. Martin's answer was forty-three words about bringing in "new voices" and "expanding this tent" — which is what you say when you are not, in fact, going to draw any line at all.

The DNC can dress this up as inclusivity and middle-ground pragmatism until the polls close. But voters can read a platform. The people funding revolution at the policymaking level are not the same people being courted with a lecture about affordability on MSNOW, and the $49 trillion figure from the Council of Economic Advisers is not a talking point — it is a bill the American taxpayer would be handed.

President Trump and Republicans are making the DSA a central argument because they know it is one that no Democratic candidate can actually run from while their own party chairman keeps holding the door open.

Twenty-four days. Ask every Democrat on the ballot the same simple question: do you disavow the socialist faction your party chair just refused to leave behind — and if not, why not?
