President Trump is drawing praise from Republican leadership for a plan to buy Russian diesel, with the GOP Majority Whip calling it proof the president is putting the American people ahead of conventional Washington thinking.
In comments circulated by Rapid Response 47, the Majority Whip said the proposal reflects a president focused on easing the burden on working families facing high fuel costs.
"It's another example of our President thinking out of the box. He's listening to the American people... Our President is trying to find every answer possible to help the American people," the Majority Whip said.
Fuel Costs Driving the Push
Pressed on the plan, the Majority Whip pointed directly to Americans struggling under global energy prices.
"The American people are hurting because of this world market when it comes to diesel and fuel in general," the Majority Whip said. "Our president is trying to find every answer possible to help the American people literally move it forward."
The remarks came in response to a question about the move to buy Russian diesel, which critics have framed as a departure from prior sanctions posture. The Majority Whip rejected that framing outright.
'The President of Peace'
Turning to the broader conflict, the Majority Whip argued that no other figure is positioned to bring the war to a close — and credited Trump with approaching it differently than his predecessors.
"And when he talks about Ukraine and Russia, there is no one else, John, who is going to get this thing resolved," the Majority Whip said.
"Donald Trump thinks outside of the box, put the American people first. But at the same time, he is the president of peace."
The Majority Whip went on to say the president is consistently ahead of the press in his handling of the conflict.
"I think he's two steps ahead of the press all the time. He's thinking about how you get these conflicts resolved — conflicts by the way that were caused by President Joe Biden and his failed foreign policy and date back to President Obama and his failed foreign policy."
'Best Negotiator on the Face of the Planet'
The Majority Whip closed by framing the diesel plan as one more move in a longer negotiating strategy.
"So again, I think Donald J. Trump is the best negotiator on the face of the planet. I think this is just another step of trying to get that resolved."
The praise reflects continued Republican confidence in the president's approach to both energy costs at home and the war abroad, as lawmakers position themselves behind a White House that they say is listening to voters first.
