President Trump said he may meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his Asia trip this month, telling reporters the prospect would be an exciting one.
The exchange came during a press availability Monday when the president was asked directly whether such a meeting was planned.
"I may, yeah. That'll be exciting, won't it?" Trump said.
In video of the exchange, the president reiterated the point: "I may. I may. That would be an exciting one, but I get along with it."
A Return to the Table
The president's comment points toward the possibility of reviving the direct diplomacy with Pyongyang that marked his first term, when he became the first sitting American president to set foot in North Korea.
Trump leaves for Asia this month, with the meeting floated as part of the trip.
The president's phrasing made clear that nothing is finalized. He put it as a possibility, not an announcement.
What Was Said
The question put to the president was blunt: "Do you plan to meet with Kim Jong Un during your Asia trip this month?"
His answer, delivered without notes and with a nod to the drama of such a summit, was the same in both the audio and its transcription: he may, and it would be exciting.
"That would be an exciting one, but I get along with it," he said.
It is the kind of personal chemistry the president has cited before as the basis for his dealings with the North Korean leader.
