Federal agents searched the Washington home of Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday morning, according to a Daily Mail report cited by The Bulwark, and the reaction from both sides of the political divide has been immediate and loud.
The search, described as part of a criminal fraud investigation into how the Minnesota congresswoman obtained entry into the United States, was first reported by the Daily Mail. The Bulwark noted in its own account that the outlet seemed to have advance knowledge of the raid, quipping that the Daily Mail "just keeps happening to be there every time the FBI raids an enemy of Trump." The account went on to theorize that the raid was staged for the benefit of what it called "MAGA chuds" — a derisive term for the president's base.
"The raid is for the MAGA chuds," The Bulwark wrote. "If they can't actually use the courts to jail, imprison or deport their foes, then they at least want to give the tabloids fodder to make it seem like they're doing it."
The raid quickly became a flashpoint on social media. Commentator Dean Obeidallah, posting on X, framed the search as part of a broader pattern of racial and religious targeting. "Rep. Ilhan Omar is Black, an immigrant, Muslim & a woman," he wrote. "All the things MAGA despises rolled into one person. That's why Trump is now using his DOJ to target her just weeks before the midterm election. He is trying to animate his racist base."
Obeidallah's post was one of the first to draw a direct line between the timing of the search and the upcoming midterm elections, a theme that would echo across left-leaning accounts throughout the afternoon.
President Trump, asked about the raid by reporters on Monday, confirmed that authorities are "looking at her very carefully" while insisting he had no advance knowledge of the operation. "Well, I understand they're looking at her very carefully," the president said. "I've always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me."
He added: "I think she's a terrible person, but that's really up to the DOJ; I have nothing to do with it."
The president's comments came during a broader discussion of events in Minnesota, where he pointed to recent gang violence, a foiled terror plot at the Mall of America, and what he described as massive fraud in state welfare programs. In remarks circulated by the account @RealAmVoice, the president did not hold back in his assessment of the congresswoman or the state she represents.
"Look at what's happening in the once great state of Minnesota, what a mess," the president said. "They have done, Somalia, wonderful, wonderful… she's a disaster, she comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military, without all they do is shoot each other and she comes into our country and she says I have a Constitutional right."
The president continued: "She's telling us about the Constitution and she comes from one of the worst countries anywhere on the planet."
He also referenced the recent violence that has gripped parts of Minnesota, including what he described as a shooting at a high school football game and an FBI arrest of a radicalized Somali who was allegedly planning an ISIS-style attack at the Mall of America.
"This is not what we want in this country, we don't want this," the president said. "What they have done for Minnesota and members of the Somalian community have looted tens of billions of dollars from Minnesota welfare programs."
The president went on to say that the Somali community in Minnesota has driven up taxes, health care costs, insurance costs, and child care costs, and accused them of widespread fraud. "We're not going to stand for it," he said. "We're not going to stand."
The Gateway Pundit, reporting on the president's remarks, noted that the criminal fraud investigation centers on immigration paperwork filed by Omar's late father when she was a child. According to that outlet, the president told reporters he had no advance knowledge of the raid but confirmed that authorities are examining the congresswoman's records closely.
The raid also prompted a sharp rejoinder from the conservative outlet Townhall, which contrasted Omar's past statements with her current reaction. In a post featuring a video, the outlet noted that in 2023, when Trump was indicted, Omar said, "No one is above the law." Now, after the FBI searched her home, she has characterized the action as an attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement.
"Ilhan Omar vs. Ilhan Omar," the outlet wrote. "2023, when Trump was indicted: 'No one is above the law.' 2026, after feds searched her D.C. home: 'an attempt to… weaponize federal law enforcement.' Democrats set the precedent. Now it's knocking on their door."
The video accompanying that post laid out the case in more detail. It noted that when Trump was indicted, Omar called on her colleagues to support accountability regardless of party. It also recalled that when the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago in 2022, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "No person is above the law."
Now, the video continued, federal agents have searched Omar's home under a judicially authorized warrant as part of what the Justice Department calls an ongoing criminal investigation. Sources told Townhall the probe centers on immigration paperwork filed by her father when she was a child.
"Democrats think they're the good guys," the video concluded. "So when they do it, it's the rule of law. But when it happens to them, it's weaponization. Biden's Justice Department searched Trump's home, and Democrat prosecutors indicted him four times when he was the leading Republican candidate. Now that president is knocking on their door. You could say they're reaping what they sowed."
The search of Omar's home comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the midterm elections, with both parties accusing the other of using federal law enforcement for political purposes. The Department of Homeland Security, which reportedly participated in the operation alongside the FBI, has not commented publicly on the specifics of the investigation.
Omar's office has not issued a formal statement, but her allies in Congress have begun to rally to her defense, calling the raid an act of political retribution. The congresswoman herself has yet to address the search directly, though her past statements on the rule of law have been widely circulated by critics in the hours since the raid became public.
The accounts carrying the story — The Bulwark, Townhall, the Gateway Pundit, Dean Obeidallah, and @RealAmVoice — represent a cross-section of the political spectrum, with each framing the event to suit its audience. What remains unclear is what, if anything, the search actually uncovered. The Justice Department has not released details of the affidavit supporting the warrant, and no charges have been filed.
Next News Network could not independently verify the claims about the investigation or the underlying allegations against Rep. Omar.
Our Take
The raid on Ilhan Omar's home is a reminder that the rule of law is not a one-way street. For years, Democrats cheered when federal agents targeted Donald Trump, insisting that no one is above the law. Now that the same tactics are being applied to one of their own, they suddenly discover the evils of weaponization. The American people are not fooled. If Omar has nothing to hide, she should welcome the investigation and cooperate fully. If she does not, she should face the consequences just like anyone else. The precedent was set by the left, and now it has come home to roost. The only question is whether Democrats will have the courage to admit that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.
