Oil Flows Through Strait of Hormuz Despite Iranian Attacks

More than 12 million barrels of oil have passed through the Strait of Hormuz per day this month, higher than last month's daily average, despite a surge in attacks from Iran. Oil flow through the strait has increased since September, with more than 9 million barrels sailing daily directly under US military protection, according to TankerTracker.com and Kpler.

The increase comes even as 26 vessels have come under attack so far in October, marking the most dangerous period for tankers and cargo ships since the war began. On Wednesday, a cargo ship sank after being hit by an unknown projectile, according to Iran's military and maritime incident analysts.

Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for US Central Command, estimated that some 19 million barrels of oil passed through on Monday alone. "Transits through the Strait of Hormuz continue despite Iran's unwarranted aggression," Hawkins told The New York Times.

However, flow has shown signs of strain, plummeting this past week after some of Iran's heaviest attacks. While nearly 23 million barrels passed through last Thursday, only a tenth of that transited on Wednesday, according to Kpler. The volatile situation, along with Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure, has kept Brent crude above $104 per barrel.
