The Department of Homeland Security announced Friday that Fiscal Year 2026 saw the lowest border crossings in American history, crediting President Trump's policies and Secretary Markwayne Mullin's leadership for a 95% drop in southwest border apprehensions compared to the Biden Administration.

Preliminary data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows fewer than 99,000 southwest border apprehensions in FY 2026 — down from more than 1.8 million per year under President Biden. Total FY 2026 apprehensions were 98,708, which is 60% lower than the Biden Administration's single highest month alone of 249,740.

Zero Releases for Entire Fiscal Year

The Border Patrol completed its first-ever fiscal year with zero releases, and September marked the 17th consecutive month with no releases. The agency said illegal aliens have received a clear message: "don't try to enter the country illegally, or you will be apprehended, detained, and deported."

Total nationwide encounters in FY 2026 were the lowest in agency history at 379,243, compared with 2.7 million per year under Biden. FY 2026 encounters were 88% lower than FY 2023 under Biden, which was the highest fiscal year ever recorded.

Border Deaths Fall Nearly 80%

The DHS report also highlighted a dramatic decline in border-related deaths. Preliminary data shows alien deaths identified by the Border Patrol fell nearly 80% in FY 2026 and since January 20, 2025, compared to the Biden Administration. Officials said fewer unlawful crossings have contributed to the decline in deaths, while CBP personnel remained ready to respond when lives were at risk.

The results reflect sustained enforcement and the deterrent effect of a secure border, according to the department. DHS said the historic low crossings were driven by strengthened border infrastructure, disrupted cartels, and protected American trade under President Trump's leadership.
