President Trump delivered a blunt message on Ukraine aid Sunday, making clear that the United States has shouldered a massive financial burden while receiving nothing in return from Kyiv.
"We've given a lot to Ukraine. They've given nothing to us. Remember that," Trump said in a video posted by the Rapid Response 47 account.
He went further, contrasting his own actions with those of his predecessor. "We've given hundreds of billions of dollars. I gave the javelins to Ukraine when he knocked out. That was me. Obama gave him pillows," Trump said. "You know the expression Obama gave him sheets of pillows. Trump gave him the javelins, so don't tell me about Ukraine."
Drawing a Sharp Contrast
The president's reference to Javelin anti-tank missiles highlights a key difference in defense policy between his administration and the Obama years. Under Barack Obama, the United States declined to provide lethal aid to Ukraine, offering non-lethal assistance instead. Trump reversed that policy, greenlighting the sale of Javelins in 2017.
"We've given a lot to Ukraine," Trump reiterated. "They've given us nothing."
The president's remarks come as debate continues over the scale and accountability of American assistance to Ukraine. Trump has long argued that European allies should bear more of the burden and that the United States must secure its own interests first.
America First on Display
By invoking the aid imbalance, Trump is pressing his signature America First approach: no more blank checks, no more one-sided generosity. His message is aimed not only at Ukraine but also at voters who question why American taxpayers are funding a conflict thousands of miles away without tangible returns.
"Remember that," Trump said, underlining the point.
