A single question from Jake Tapper just collapsed the entire "political witch hunt" narrative surrounding Ilhan Omar. On CNN, Tapper asked why the Minnesota congresswoman never marched into the Biden Justice Department years ago to fix her immigration paperwork and pay whatever fine she owed. The answer, delivered by CNN's former federal prosecutor Elie Honig, wasn't what the network's viewers expected: the investigation into Omar began under Joe Biden, not Donald Trump.
Strong enough that her citizenship is on the table.
A Judge Saw the Texts
This is not a Trump-era invention. The evidence trail starts with Sahra Noor—Omar's sister. Her phone was seized, and investigators recovered family text messages that laid out details of Omar's immigration history. A federal judge reviewed that evidence and signed off on a search warrant. That is not what a witch hunt looks like. A witch hunt doesn't have a neutral magistrate reading family text messages and concluding probable cause exists.
No charges have been filed yet, and no denaturalization order has been issued. But a federal grand jury is seated and hearing evidence. Honig effectively admitted Omar might have fared better had she proactively gone to authorities under the Biden administration and tried to resolve discrepancies in her immigration file. She didn't. Now the case moves forward under a Trump Justice Department that has made clear it will not bend the rules for a connected member of Congress.
Where Is Ilhan Omar?
Her communications director and husband, Tim Mynett, refused to answer reporters asking whether Omar remains in the United States following the raid. He snapped at questions and walked away. She has stayed out of public view since federal agents seized her travel documents. President Trump responded to the unfolding scandal by saying Omar ought to go back to her own country.
Forget the Morocco rumor. Snopes rated it false, and Omar's defenders would love nothing more than to hide behind a fake story instead of confronting the real one. The actual story is that a judge saw family text messages, authorized a search, and a federal grand jury is now reviewing evidence against a sitting congresswoman whose citizenship is in question.
Every patriot who waited in line, paid the fees, and swore the oath is watching this case. If a member of Congress can lie her way through the immigration system and then dare federal authorities to touch her, then citizenship becomes a formality for the well-connected and a punishment for everyone else. The law applies to every American—or it applies to none.
