Americans overwhelmingly support energy independence from foreign oil and natural gas, according to a new poll. The survey, conducted by Morning Consult for the Council for Secure America, found that 71% of respondents said it is better for America to produce its own energy, while only 29% preferred being part of a global energy economy.

Strong Support for Domestic Production

The findings come as the US contends with high prices amid the ongoing war in Iran. A majority of Americans support energy independence so the US no longer has to rely on foreign countries for oil and natural gas. The results align with a prior June 2025 poll that found 56% of Americans saying the same.

Economic and Security Benefits

Fifty-seven percent agree that energy independence helps the economy grow by creating high-paying jobs, preventing foreign countries from spiking prices and keeping American dollars at home. Thirty-one percent had no opinion, and 13% disagreed.

Sixty-seven percent supported reforms that "allow America's energy infrastructure to meet our growing electricity needs and make energy more affordable," while 7% disagreed and 26% had no opinion.

The Council for Secure America supports American energy independence in all its forms as bolstering US security. The group also supports the US-Israel partnership and the Abraham Accords.

The poll interviewed 2,200 American adults from Sept. 25-27 and has a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points.
