Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Monday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing an additional $858 million in disaster relief funding for North Carolina as the state continues to recover from Hurricane Helene.
Speaking in Fairview, North Carolina, Harris said she is proud that FEMA has committed $7.5 billion to rebuilding damage caused by the storm, and that the recovery effort will take years.
"One of the things I'm proudest of is that FEMA committed $7.5 billion to rebuilding all the damage caused by Helene — and I'm proud to announce $858 million in additional disaster relief funding," Harris said.
Harris Credits Trump and Advocates for Funding
Harris credited President Trump, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and local advocate Michael Wattley for their roles in securing the funding.
"Thanks to the hard work of President Trump and the advocacy of these fighters, Secretary Sean Duffy, and of course because Michael Wattley would not shut up about it, we're announcing 858 million in additional disaster relief funding from the Department," Harris said.
Harris described visiting Fairview shortly before being sworn in as vice president, saying she "will never forget that visit" and that she knew "we needed to show up for you."
The announcement was posted by the White House rapid response account, which highlighted Harris's remarks in North Carolina.
