House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is demanding an investigation into U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams of the Southern District of Florida, accusing the Obama-appointed jurist of abusing her authority after she sanctioned two of President Trump's lawyers in a case that had already been voluntarily dismissed.

The demand, first reported by Fox News, comes in a letter to the Judicial Conference of the United States co-led by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts. Jordan and Issa wrote that there is "evidence that Judge Williams abused her judicial authority and violated fundamental tenets of judicial impartiality," according to Fox News.

The underlying case began in early 2026, when Trump, his adult sons Eric and Donald Jr., and the Trump Organization filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. The suit followed the leak of the president's tax returns by former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn, who was later sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Trump filed the suit in his personal capacity and voluntarily dismissed it in May. Shortly afterward, the administration announced a settlement agreement that included $1. Under the terms, Trump himself would receive no compensation, but would get a formal apology from the federal government and the IRS would be barred from ever auditing Trump or his family.

Williams, however, did not let the matter rest. In a July 13 order, she accused the plaintiffs of manipulating the courts to achieve the settlement and sanctioned two of the president's lawyers. Her order referred attorney Alejandro Brito to the Florida Bar for potential disciplinary action and barred attorney Daniel Epstein from practicing in her jurisdiction for at least a year.

Jordan and Issa's letter called the timing of Williams' order "suspect," noting it came after the plaintiffs had already filed a notice of voluntary dismissal ending the dispute between the parties. The lawmakers also accused Williams of relying on an amicus brief submitted by Democracy Defenders Action, a left-wing judicial activist group. That brief, submitted on behalf of 35 former federal judges, urged Williams to reopen the case despite the dismissal and accused both sides of "fraud" over the settlement.

"Judge Williams issued her July 13 order after the plaintiffs filed a notice of voluntary dismissal of the case, ending the dispute between the parties," Jordan and Issa wrote. "Although Judge Williams invoked the court's inherent authority to impose sanctions, the Committee is not aware of Eleventh Circuit precedent applying inherent sanctions authority" in such circumstances.

The letter asks the Judicial Conference to review Williams' conduct and determine whether the matter should be referred to the Judicial Council. The Judicial Conference is the national policy-making body for the federal courts and handles complaints of judicial misconduct.

Williams was appointed to the federal bench by then-President Barack Obama. The case has drawn attention because of the intersection between the president's personal legal fight and the administration's broader effort to investigate what it calls the weaponization of federal agencies against political opponents.

The sanctions against Trump's legal team have not been publicly detailed beyond the referrals. It is not yet known whether the Judicial Conference has responded to the letter or whether Williams has commented on the misconduct claim.

Our Take

Here's what the establishment doesn't want you to notice: a federal judge waited until after a case was voluntarily dismissed, then reached back to sanction the president's lawyers based on a brief from a left-wing activist group. That's not jurisprudence. That's a message.

Jim Jordan and Darrell Issa are right to demand answers. The American people deserve a judiciary that applies the law evenly, not one that punishes lawyers for representing disfavored clients. If a judge can't handle a case involving Donald Trump without letting her political preferences dictate her orders, she has no business on the bench.

The fact that this came from an Obama appointee, in the Southern District of Florida, using a brief from a group that calls itself "Democracy Defenders"—while accusing the plaintiffs of fraud—tells you everything about how the Left operates. They lost the 2024 election, they lost the settlement, and now they're using the courts to exact revenge.

Patriots, this is why the fight for judicial integrity matters. The Judicial Conference should take this complaint seriously. And every American who believes in equal justice under law should be watching.

About time someone held these judges accountable! Jordan is doing exactly what we elected these people to do. The double standard has to end.

Exactly. If a conservative judge pulled half of what these activist judges do, the media would be screaming for impeachment.

Accountability shouldn't be partisan - that's the whole point. Good for Jordan for pushing this.

I've been following this judge for a while and the pattern is pretty clear once you look at the rulings. Does anyone know if the House Judiciary Committee has actually scheduled a hearing yet, or is this still just a demand?
